To provide budding lawyers an experience of clinical legal education which prepares them to creative and analytical capacity to face actual courtroom, Amity Law School, Noida started its three day “Amity Competition on Law Reforms” from November 18 to 20 at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Sector- 125, Noida.

Welcoming the august gathering, Maj. Gen. Nilendra Kumar, Director, Amity Law School, Noida said that Law reforms are the talk of the day and it is much needed in Indian context. Most of the laws are century old and need to be revised. Maj Gen.Kumar shared that the competition on law reforms will inculcate in students an expertise to frame laws and also to undertake suitble drafting capabilities. Their knowledge of laws and constitution will be tested by bench of three or more judges invited to assess them.
Addressing the august gathering, Dr. Balwinder Shukla, Officiating Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh remarked that this competition will serve as a test of legal proficiency and will provide enlightening thoughts on legal reforms to the participants.
Inaugurating the Competition on Law Reforms, Hon’ble Mr. M.C. Bhandare, Governor of Odisha while sharing his views on the importance of Law Reforms said that every party should have atleast 50% women in power. Hon’ble Mr. Bhandare said that till last century men were considered superior because of physical power but in present times brain power is more important and nature has given the equal brain power to both men and women. There fore women should be given equal opportunity and considered more superior. Speaking to the budding lawyers, Hon’ble Mr. Bhandare said that law being a noble and learned profession, students should adopt integrity, independence and industry as the main factors to be successful and four Cs i.e. Corruption, Communalism, Cste, Criminalization should be eradicated in order to have stability of the party and a stble government Refering to the upcoming Uttar Praddesh Polls, he advised the voters to be sensible while voting and vote for those parties who have proved themselves stble. Laying on the needs of the value based education, he emphasized on love, compassion and patriotism to be part of education.
Mr. P.P. Rao, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court while addressing the budding lawyers as to how they can become good lawyers said that it is the law that brings the social order and advised students to compete with a sportsmanship spirit and find out new ideas as to how electoral reforms can be implemented in this country. Talking on the recent election to be held in UP, he is of the opinion that candidate who gets 50% plus 1 vote should be announced a winner rather than ones who win with 15-20% vote only.
Twelve prestigious law institutes from different parts of India like ILS, Pune, NALSAR, Hyderabad, Symbiosis, Pune, RMLNLU, Lucknow, Sastra University, Tamil Nadu, ITM, Gurgaon, IMS Noida, Mewar Ghaziabad, Amity Law Schools – Noida, Delhi, Lucknow are participating in the Amity Competition on Law Reforms.
VALEDICTORY FUNCTION
In a tough competition between Amity Law School, Delhi and ILS Pune to bag the winners title for the Amity Competition on Law Reforms. ILS Pune won the emerged as winners who dwelt upon the various issues of electoral reforms and gave valuable suggestions.
Coming from the youth of India, the participants who collected at Amity University Noida from all over the country to participate in this prestigious competition, the first of its kind, the budding lawyers proved their mantle and preparedness towards the topic “Electoral Reforms”. They suggested that there should be unified elections for Parliament and Assembly and all states should conduct their elections within a span of 6 months so that there is more stability in the country. They further suggested that there should be more financial independence for Election Commission and the procedure for removal of election commissioners should be on the same line as of Judges of higher courts. Provision should be made for de-registration of parties and the source of all donations, irrespective of amount should be disclosed. Students further suggested that the inequality which exists between independent candidates and regular party candidates in respect to the compulsory 10 persons recommendation must be removed. The account of individual candidate and political parties should be audited annually by the office of Comptroller of Auditor General were some of the other suggestions that emerged from this contest.
During Semi finals ILS, Pune team defeated ITM, Gurgaon and Amity Law School, Delhi defeated Amity Law School, Lucknow.
While distributing the prizes to the winners of the competition Chief Guest of the occasion Mr. Vivek Tankha Additional Solicitor General of India said that there should be a provision in law to de-regulate those Political Parties who do not do their work seriously and indulge in money laundering. Amongst other concerns during elections, he commented that money power issues need to be addressed, defection laws need to be changed. He further suggested that character and psyche of people should be change to ensure that society moves in an orderly fashion and people should well understand the kind of candidates they vote for.
Speaking on the issue of electoral reforms Mr. Rahul Dev, an eminent journalist remarked that India has become an example for other countries as the most powerful democratic country but within us there is need to bring reforms in political parties internal working and also a need for reform to curb dominance of family oriented political parties. Rather the competence of the candidate should be considered and each candidate should be elected with 50% and 1 vote which can be also conducted through run-off elections, commented Mr. Dev.
While addressing the august gathering, Gen Nilendra Kumar, Director, Amity Law School Noida congratulated all the participants coming from all over India for their valuable inputs and their deep insight in the knowledge of the subject and remarked that the recommendations of this competition will be sent to the Parliament library and Law Commission.
The Best Legislative Initiative – Researcher award was bagged by Mr. Akhil from NALSAR. The Best Legislative Initiative – Male was won by Mr. Udit from RMLNLU, Lucknow. The The Best Legislative Initiative – Female was given to Ms. Avneet from Symbiosis.
