Amity Law School, Noida organized Amity Quiz on “Constitutional Law”, the first ever competition of its kind, at Amity Campus, Sector-125, Noida

The Prize Distribution Ceremony of the Quiz was graced by the Chief Guest Hon’ble Mr. Salman Khurshid, Union Minister for Law & Justice, Guest of Honor Mr. K.T.S. Tulsi, Senior Advocate and Vice Chairman Law Commission of India, Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.K. Sikri, Acting Chief Justice, Delhi High Court and Mr. Atul Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh.

Welcoming all the distinguished guests and participants, Maj Gen. (Retd.) Nilendra Kumar- Director, Amity Law School, Noida dwelt on the objective of organizing the Quiz and presented a brief report about the Quiz.

The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Mr. Salman Khurshid, Union Minister for Law & Justice, Govt. of India applauded the ambience, quality of students and faculty members at Amity Law School and expressed his concern as to why for so many years the same kind of quality campus life is not being provided in other Law Institutes across the country. Talking about the multiple roles played by the judges and the challenges faced by them, the Honorable Minister said, “A judge is incredible product of human nature, a judge has to understand language, emotions, compassion, discipline and firmness, he has to be a creator of goodness as well as a destroyer of evil. A Judge has great challenges especially those of democracy because there is a separation of powers in the country and at the same time, there are politicians who are accountble to voters and political system but politicians have been told that they have areas where they can operate, the judges have an area where they operate and the legislature has its own area where it can operate. The important thing is how to decide where to draw the line and this ultimately has to be decided by the person who adjudicates ie the Judge. There are healthy tensions that exist in the area of separation of powers, between the judges and the members of executive but finally the last word lies with the Judge because they are the ones who finally speak what the Constitution actually means”.

Sharing his views on “Constitutional vision of the Justice” , Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.K. Sikri, Acting Chief Justice, Delhi High Court called upon the budding lawyers to cherish the value of freedom and liberty along with fundamental rights and duties because when they will join the Law profession, they have to enforce and uphold these values, rights and duties. He advised the students to always consider the rule of law supreme and motivated them to ensure that the Justice delivered is fair and timely.

Addressing the students, Mr. Atul Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh congratulated them for their enthusiastic participation in the Quiz. He called upon the students to make the best out of the experiences they have gained during the quiz and stressed that their future will rest on how much they can learn and implement out of those experiences.

Mr. K.T.S. Tulsi, Senior Advocate and Vice Chairman Law Commission of India shared his views on the execution of death sentence and referred to the delay in the execution of death sentence as “Cruel, Inhuman and Unconstitutional”. He stressed that death penalty is the severest form of punishment awarded in rarest of the rare cases but there are challenges in the execution of the rarest of the rare punishment and the biggest challenge is the delay in the execution of death sentence, which is even worse than death. He expressed his concern over the laxity shown by Supreme Court in administering death sentence by referring to several judicial cases wherein with the passage of time the rules seem to be getting relaxed.

The event saw the participation of 180 law students pursuing five years and three years Law courses from 42 leading law colleges in the country including Delhi University, IP University, NLU Orrisa, RML NLU Lucknow, GNLU, Gandhinagar, RGNLU Patiala, NLIU Bhopal, Army Institute of Law, Mohali, Amity Law School, Delhi, Vivekanand Institute of Professional Studies (VIPS), KIIT School of law, KIIT University, NALSAR, K C Law College Mumbai, Deccan Education Society Law College amongst others.

The quiz comprised of high grade multiple choice questions numbering 100 to be answered in 90 minutes. The questions were based on the provisions of Constitution of India and the cases decided by the Supreme Court as reported in law journals till 31st December 2011.

Attractive cash prizes and medals named after eminent jurists were awarded to the winners. The First Prize titled as “Nani Palkhivala Award” comprising of a Medal and Rs. 50, 000 cash went to John Mathew from Faculty of Law, Delhi University, Second Prize titled as “ Homi Seervai Award” went to Navneet Krisna from NLU, Orrisa, Third Prize titled as “ B R Ambedkar Award” was lifted by K Suresh from GNLU, Gandhinagar and an Exclusive Prize for the host Institute titled as “Justice H R Khanna Award” was bagged by Avinash Kumar from Amity Law School, Noida.
